| You’re A Geek? Hey, Me Too! | |||||||
|
You’re SUCH a geek… That’s right baby. Turned on much? The term geek has been thrown around for sometime and in the past was usually used in a derogatory context. However, in the last few years the definition of a geek has evolved and it is bordering on becoming a term of endearment. In fact, being a geek has become cool. You see in one way or another, we are all geeks. We are all passionate about certain pastimes or subjects to the point where we want to learn as much about it and spend a lot of time actively involved with it. That is the laymen’s term definition of geekiness. Being passionate about something. When you become an expert about a specific subject, you my friend are now a geek. Geeks aren’t just the sci-fi, comic book crowd as commonly thought. People who are obsessed with hockey are geeks. People who love cooking are geeks. Those who are ardent enjoyers of Harley Davison motorcycles are…you guessed it, geeks. Anytime someone is a devoted follower of a certain activity it makes them a geek. Now there are some who are still weary of the geek term and therefore mask their obsession with another name. Depending on where your interest falls on the perceived cool scale determines what type of nomenclature you will be given. Someone who is crazy about Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a geek. Whereas someone who loves football is a fan. Someone that enjoys movies tremendously is a geek where someone who loves classic paintings is an aficionado. Remember connoisseur is just a classier name for geek people. No matter what the label, it is all the same thing. Whether it is a love for music, fashion, Sex in the City, horseracing, the stock market, or skateboarding. We are all geeks about something. In fact, it seems the only way you can ever be very successful in certain fields is to be a geek about it. At some point, every famous musician we know was talked about behind their back about their endless preoccupation with music. “Ahhh, he never stops talking about music. Music this, music that. He and his friends can go on for hours about their friggin record collections. I’m serious, you should hear them. And how much time do they have to sit in their garage and practice? Uggh. It gets really tired sometimes. Eddie is obsessed!” You know what? Eddie grew up to lead the band Pearl Jam. What a geek huh? Only the geeks about interior design get to grow up to work on the show Trading Spaces. Only those that geeked out over acting get to grow up to be actors. You see, geeks rule the world. There is nothing wrong with being a geek. To be honest, if you aren’t a geek about something(s) I fear you must be an incredibly boring person. Somebody who lacks passion, regardless of where it is directed, is hollow and dull. Those things that we geek out on are the spices of life. It is healthy to be a sports geek, a television geek, or a fitness geek, it’s what helps make us interesting. The key is to not become a nerd. Nerds…major difference. When you become so pre-occupied and single minded in your interests that it distracts you from the pursuit of the opposite sex, well then my poor, sad, Klingon dressing up friend who lives in their parents basement…you are a nerd. And guess what Poindexter, nerds will never be cool. Nerds just get beat up. …but that’s just my opinion.
