The Hobbit- J.R.R Tolkien -- A Book Review
"The English speaking world is divided into those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and those are going to read them"
-The Sunday Times

I know this isn't a new book; in fact it's not new to me either. This Christmas the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is set to hit theatres. I was watching the trailer in awe remembering how much I enjoyed these books when I was young. I wanted to re-read Tolkien's series. So I went out and picked them up. I'm not an avid reader compared to some but I enjoy reading a good book now and then. Did I say a good book? This book is great!

For those few out there who haven't heard of The Hobbit, it was first published in Great Britain in 1937. The author J.R.R. Tolkien is renowned for his fantasy fiction books. There are hundreds of web sites dedicated to him and The Lord of the Rings series of books. http://www.lordoftherings.net/

The Hobbit takes place long ago a time in history called middle earth by Tolkien. This was an age of dragons, dwarfs, and many other creatures not seen by a human's eye. Personally I enjoy stories of fantasy and magic…if you're gonna read a book for fun make it one that is really fun. I know what you're thinking, "oh…fantasy that stuff's for geeks." Well, you could be right in some respects but I think The Hobbit tends to break that mold. This book, if only by the number of people reading it, is mainstream. The narrator (Tolkien) talks to you, it's like he's sitting beside you in a comfy chair, blowing smoke rings speaking of events he's actually lived through (or at least seen close up).

The main character is Bilbo Baggins…a hobbit. Bilbo is a very proper hobbit who never wastes his time or reputation on such frivolous things as adventures. Until a wizard, Gangalf volunteers him for an adventure that will take him to the ends of and into Middle Earth. Bilbo has been chosen to accompany 13 dwarves (as spelled in middle earth) to take back a treasure that is rightfully theirs. I love the way this book is written, Tolkien has a way of describing the battles and perils that plague our protagonists throughout the book. He makes you feel like you are fighting with them side by side. Tolkien describes thoroughly down to the smallest detail in his own skillful way. Reading this book gives me that same feeling I got when I saw the release of The Empire Strikes back when I was a kid.

The Hobbit is an epic adventure with pint-sized heroes, and the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. If you are in the market for a good read and don't want to be left out in the dark this Christmas, I would urge you to pick up a copy, sit back and get ready for an adventure that may just change your mind about fantasy fiction.
