| Another Season? D'oh! | |||||||
|
"Variety reports that Fox has renewed ''The Simpson's'' through the end of the 2004-05 season. At that point, it will have run 16 years and some 360 episodes. Plus, it will have far surpassed the record for longest-running primetime sitcom." Two more seasons of "The Simpson's." What greater gift could any dedicated viewer of the medium of television ask for? Time and time again this show has proven itself as one of the most consistently funny and well-written shows to grace the television landscape in the past ten years. With every season, television viewers are blessed with another season filled with the hilarious antics of the Simpson family. Cough! Just when you thought that this could possibly be the last season. Kabang! Here comes another one! Oh happy day! Cough! Cough! Did you hear something? I could swear I just heard something while I was typing. Anyway, all I can say is that I am looking so forward to seeing more of the crazy antics of my favourite animated characters. Just two more seasons? How about three? Or four? I just hope this show never ends! Cough! Cough! Cough! O.K., I definitely heard that this time. Normally when I'm writing an article I'm generally not interrupted. Based on the fact that I live alone, the possibility of being interrupted at all during the writing process is practically impossible. Usually I await for rebuttals of my visionary words in the vaunted "reader opinions section" of our site, not during the actual process of writing an article. So rather than trying to investigate the technologically unfeasible ramifications of this whole scenario and contacting my Internet service provider with my numerous security issues, I have decided to let the "interruptor" speak his/her peace. "Hey Christian, big fan of the site, big fan. Love your stuff, especially that one about the thing and that other thing. Anyway, I happened to come across the first paragraph of your recently unfinished column on the news of "The Simpson's" season renewal after an exhaustive Google search. I couldn't help but read your opening words. I know where this is going. You're probably going to go on and on about how "The Simpson's" has been so great year after year despite all of the Internet speculation that disputes that fact. But let's face facts. After season five this show has gone downhill. Ever since Conan O'Brien left as the producer of this show it has never been the same. I mean that whole episode with Homer and Johnny Cash? Totally sucked. I refuse to watch any more episodes until they bring Conan back. You can read my opinions on various other innocuous message boards I go by the name '2Kewl4Skul.' Peace out." How many times have I heard this argument? Man, "The Simpson's" ain't what they used to be. I have probably about a million different ways to rebut this asinine point of view, but I think in this case it's probably best to take the direct approach. What do you want? The show has been on for over fourteen years. Fourteen years! Granted some shows haven't been as funny as past episodes but what do you expect? Do you honestly think that every single episode is going to be as funny as "Marge vs. Monorail?" Will we ever be able to relive the magic of Albert Brooks performance as Hank Scorpio in "You Only Move Twice." Pure gold. "But, Homer, on your way out, if you wanna kill somebody, it would help a lot." Maybe not. It's all hit and miss. From the very first season, this show has been "on" and "off." Some of it works and some of it doesn't. Recent episodes of the new season have actually been pretty damn funny. Granted, sometimes these recent episodes don't pack the punch of past episodes, but every now and then you'll find yourself watching and waiting for those comedic gems that are always peppered throughout every episode. Where else are you going to get straight from the gut satire like this? I'll tell you where, nowhere! What exactly are you ardent Simpson's fans hoping for? Would you rather be sitting in your living room watching puerile reruns of the critically acclaimed "Momma's Family?" I don't think so. With every new season comes new writers and new producers trying to make this television icon the best it can be. It has become a television institution of intelligent script writing. To compare it to past seasons is not fair. Not fair in the least. There have been hilarious episodes this season, shows that I've watched and laughed my ass off. If you are watching this seasons episodes with the mindset that every new episode doesn't compare to past seasons I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Because if you are purely focused on looking for crap, no matter how limited the actual evidence of "crap" exists you will find it despite all extraneous elements. But if you if you keep an open mind, just look for humour and genuine inspirations of comedic genius I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Otherwise you'll probably miss another legendary quote from Homer such as this "Ooh, the internet is on computers now!" Peace out. Got Something You wanna say to this Guy?
