Run Ronnie Run - A Movie Review
"Y'all are brutalizing me!" - Ronnie Dobbs

Direct that statement to the executives at New Line Cinema… for truer words were never spoken.

Run Ronnie Run is the first film from the terribly innovative minds of the creators of Mr. Show (which ran on HBO for 4 years and the first two seasons are now available on DVD), Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. The film follows the story of Ronnie Dobbs (David Cross) the lower social class hero who is arguably the most arrested man in North American history. However, Dobb's fortunes change when he meets a bizarre British chap named Terry Twillstein (Bob Odenkirk) who makes Ronnie a huge star by creating a "Cops"-like TV program for him to get exclusively arrested on. The film is unconventional, original, ridiculous and very funny. But the real story here is that hardly anyone has seen it, because the film studio New Line Cinema refuses to release it.

Completed almost 2 years ago, Run Ronnie Run has been resting "in the can" as we like to call it in the 'biz. It has enjoyed very successful screenings at various film festivals (including Sundance) across the country yet the studio still has not determined a release date. Thanks to the privileges BoldOpinion.com affords me, I was able to view the latest cut of the film and I can say quite safely that New Line is really missing the boat with this one…Run Ronnie Run is a very clever and funny film. Understanding that I am a huge Mr. Show mark, I can also announce that the film would appeal to a much wider audience, then just hardcore fans of the television program. To put it simply for our friends at New Line…it would likely turn a profit.

The film (written by Cross and Odenkirk and other Mr. Show alum Scott Aukerman, BJ Porter and Brian Posehn) is a strange brew made up of a mix of different comedy styles including spoof, physical comedy, satire and just plain weirdness. Run Ronnie Run is filled with sight gags, odd characters and hilarious musical numbers (yes, musical numbers) including a ditty sung by Jack Black that has to be heard to be believed and for fans of Mr. Show another single by the band "Three Times One Minus One". The film is also sprinkled with a number of cameos including Ben Stiller, Andy Richter, Gary Shandling, Dave Foley, Scott Thompson, the creators of South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and countless others which is truly a testament to Bob and David's standing in the comedic community. Plus, the fat kid is priceless…a must see.

It truly is a shame that this film remains in limbo while garbage like Bubble Boy, Stealing Harvard and Juwanna Mann get national releases. Perhaps I don't understand the intricacies of running a film studio but I would love to hear someone explain this one to me? All said and done, when the film finally does get released, either limitedly in theatres or on DVD, I highly recommend a viewing. Hopefully Odenkirk and Cross have not been soured too much on their debut into feature filmmaking and continue to plug away with other projects. If Run Ronnie Run is any indication, they certainly have the tools to create bizarrely entertaining comedies…let's just hope in the future they partner with a film studio that gets it.

…but that's just my opinion.
