Matrix Reloaded - A Movie Review
Now I know the best way to start any film review is to do a quick synopsis of the film's basic plot outline, describe a few key scenes (while carefully not revealing too much), and mentioning the film's actors and director and their parts in the creation of the film. However, in sitting down to start my review of The Matrix Reloaded, I think that if a multi-million dollar film can leave out a plot, then I can leave the conventional review structure behind. So I think I'll start with the actors.

The Matrix Reloaded brings back all the actors that we loved in the first film. To start with one of the few positives in the acting category, Carrie-Ann Moss is still pretty cool in her black garb, and for the record the best fight scenes involve her. Gosh she can move… and she makes you believe that she is part of a mankind saving force. And Agent Smith, Hugo Weaving, plays his character to perfection. Causing me to be routing for him by the end, who really cares if Zion is gone... long live Agent Smith!

But then of course comes in our hero Neo, Keanu Reeves. And basically this is the first instance of where the movie goes terribly wrong. Now, I admittedly am not a huge Keanu fan. In my opinion, his acting coup really was Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. And I have to say for the first Matrix that worked. Neo was supposed to be confused and perplexed, quite within Keanu's range. But for the Matrix Reloaded, we have to believe that Neo is the savior, a Christ-like being that will save all mankind from the rein of the machines. Now he is no longer confused and about to yell "Bogus' into the camera, but a hero…a character to believe in. This is just not possible for Mr. Reeves. Now to give the directors credit, Andy and Larry Wachowski, they do seem to realize this fatal flaw in Keanu's performance and really try not and make him talk too much. But to believe this guy is a savior? No long black coat, however cool, can stretch my imagination that much.

A too bloated Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne's acting is so bad in one speech scene that I thought it was a joke. No longer the cool, stoic leader he now becomes a fat freak, and due to the bad scripting, somewhat pathetic in his lines.

Now sure, there were a few mind-blowing special effect scenes that really made it almost worth the $11.50…almost. The whole car chase and Neo fighting Agent Smith(s) was really quite amazing. But the rest of the scenes were so obvious filler for 120 min that it became redundant and boring. Neo finishes fighting the 200 Agent Smiths, but watch out…because 1/2 hour later he has to spend 10 minutes fighting some 5 regular henchmen. And come to think of it….if you have the power to control and recreate the Matrix, why the hell are you still bothering too throw punches Neo? But then again, what would the makers have done with all that extra wire hanging in the set?

And the badness doesn't stop there, with the introduction of Zion; I literally could not believe how much of a nosedive this film takes from its predecessor. Stealing the same basic machines used in 'Aliens' in order to have the humans be able to move the huge Sentinel blocking gates, how do we go from a command post of all white 'Minority Report' stolen computer screens, to a city made of pipes and plain steel? And what Focus group reported to the film's makers that all the Matrix really needed to be cool was a rave scene and some sex. I really would have had more respect if Morpheus would have tied a day-glow stick around his immense girth while yelling, "Party on Dudes!"

All in all, the Matrix Reloaded was a bomb of a movie in my opinion. Which for a science fiction lover such as myself was quite a disappointment. The few good points are overshadowed by the lack of a plot, the horrendous acting, the brutal realization of Zion, and the general pointlessness to the fight scenes. Keanu…please go back and find Ted… and Andy and Larry, please go back and read your script for the first Matrix…maybe there you will find your plot.
