| The
greatest superhero movie of all time!
I'm sorry, I know that Andrew reviewed this movie last week and that most of you have probably already seen it. But fuck man, I think that X-men 2 is the greatest superhero movie of all time! Spoilers AHEAD! Up until this point in time, Superman 2 has pretty much been considered the best comic book adaptation. Sure it's dated, but the battle scene in that movie where they are throwing buses and shit is awesome. Sure Spiderman was good, but it wasn't great. The Goblin was a joke in that movie and I'm sorry but I didn't like how computerized Spiderman looked. And sure X-men 1 was good, but it was a tad too short and a bit too light I think, is the word I'm looking for. It was a good entrance movie, but just didn't deliver like this one did. I think the best aspect of this movie, or the thing that put this movie over the top was the writing, the script. The performances were awesome, totally, and as a friend says Hugh Jackman was BORN to play Wolverine. But for me, it was all the subtle things in the movie that really took these comic book characters to the next level in adult entertainment. When Wolverine and the kids are at the Drakes family home, Pyro looks at the family portrait and immediately you know he has darkness in him. (Ok for those of us who know the characters from the comics, we already knew that he was with Magneto.) Another huge thing for me was the Phoenix references. Some of you may know about the Phoenix saga, but for those who don't, let me explain what I'm talking about. At the end of the movie, when Jean Grey is holding back the waters and stopping Nightcrawler from getting her, and launching the Black Bird you see her engulfed in flames around her eyes (this happens earlier in the movie also). Then at the end after Professor X smiles and says everything will be alright, you see some sort of yellow image under the water. That is the Phoenix, Jean Grey eventually transforms into the very powerful being The Phoenix. For me as a fan, sitting there and very early on when her eyes went yellow, I was freaking out, I couldn't believe that they were telling THAT story. But geek moments aside, there are just sooo many cool things in this movie. When Magneto breaks out of jail? Give me a fucking break; I defy you to not geek out at that scene. Magneto overall is just done so well, I mean he is the quintessential villain in these movies. When he reverses the second Cerebro and tells Charles that the humans aren't following his rules? I mean come on, THAT is how you portray an evil man. When he asks Pyro his name, and Pyro says "John". "No your Real name," Magneto says. Come on, that is fuckin cool. "You're a God among insects, and don't let anyone tell you any different." How could Pyro NOT join Magneto, I would! And what discussion would be complete without talking about Nightcrawler? I mean the little visual effect when he disappears? Man this movie is just perfect. It's been said many of times, but that opening sequence when he is kicking all that ass is just something you HAVE to see. This movie should be the benchmark for superhero movies, it takes these formerly childish characters and portrays them in a completely adult fashion. Think about what we were watching, people who can levitate, freeze things, and blow them up? But never while watching that movie do you feel that it couldn't happen for real. These characters were taken from the written page, and brought to life on the big screen so perfectly. Hats off to Bryan Singer,
excellent job! Hollywood take note, THIS is how you make these movies.
Trust the audience, tell good stories, and be true to these characters.
I think audiences would rather see something like this, than another former
television show turned into a movie. DOWNS Don't like what I have to say? Do you think I really care? Hit me here. Click here for more Articles by this Author
