| Is
up with "Jumping on the Bandwagon"?
I don't watch sports, well more correctly I don't watch the majority of popular sports. I watch wrestling, which I don't consider a sport and I used to watch a lot of football. I don't watch baseball, hockey, soccer or Canadian Football (not really a sport either LOL). However when my local team makes it to the playoffs I can't help but be caught up in the entire hullabaloo. When the Blue Jays won the World Series for the second time a few years ago, I ditched my college classes, hopped on a train and was down partying like it was 1999. I had only watched maybe the last 10 games of the season but I was pouring my heart into it like I had been a fan all my life. The bottom line is that these seasons go on for way too fucking long. AND people expect the fans to act differently than the players themselves, they have no loyalty so why should we? Remember the strike? I mean these fuckin assholes have one of the best jobs in the world, doing what they love and they strike for more money? What a fuckin joke. The Toronto Maple Leafs, for those of you who don't know have not won a Stanley cup in over 50 years. There is a song written about it by the Tragically Hip, Fifty Mission Cap that is a great song and embodies Toronto's passion with winning a Stanley cup. My point here is that this is a big deal, every year as the Leafs creep closer to the cup and ascend the latter of playoffs the city, no province, begins to hold its breath. So it's pretty fair to assume that many non-hockey fans are beginning to tune in and starting to follow the action. And I'm one of them, man regular season hockey sucks ass, there are so many fuckin teams, most of the players jump from team to team with no real allegiance to anything other than money. I mean how much time are we expected invest to be a fan? I'm sorry I can't watch a team for 5 fuckin months man, I have a life and it doesn't center around whether or not a bunch of guys put a black hunk of rubber into a mash net. But when it comes time for the playoffs, that's a whole different ballgame, not to mix metaphors. I mean I'm not even a fan and I can tell that game 7 of the Leafs and Sens was awesome. The guys on that team poured their heart into that game, and won. The bottom line though is that regular season play is not like that. So why do regular fans get pissed at people like me? Do you think that I'm unworthy to root for the team because I haven't spent hours upon hours reviewing stats and learning the spelling of all the Europeans names? More importantly do I give a fuck? No I don't wear a fuckin Leaf jersey, nor do I know more than say 5 names of the members on the team. However if they win the Cup, or even make it to the game I'll be standing there, beer hoisted in hand, cheering them on. And if they lose I will go back to my life and wait until next year, oh and maybe I'll get myself one of those jerseys, but mine will just say FUCKOFF on the back. SO SAYETH THE SHEPHERD Downs Don't like what I have to say? Do you think I really care? Hit me here. |
