Actually gentle reader, I'm not going to bitch this week. I'm going to share with you, a love of mine. It's a Saturday in October and it's a gorgeous day here in Toronto. The sun is out, and despite it being October, the temperature is up around 20 degrees. So most of the people in the city are working on their gardens, or going downtown to do some shopping; things like that. Not me. I have woken up, got dressed and walked up to my local dealer of comic books. Yes I love comic books. I walk in the store and browse the shelf picking up my weekly titles. Think of episodic television, characters you love put in situations that are either funny, scary, or exciting. That's what a comic book is. Just in literary form. I buy my 6 or 7 comics, and venture back out into the beautiful day. Yes it is a great day. I stop off at the local variety store to pick up some supplies I will need and continue on home. Today is an extra special day because my girlfriend and my roommate are not around. Comics are a very personal experience, you have to immerse yourself in the comic. That can't happen when people are talking around you. (Well for me anyway.) I lay down on the couch, flip the TV onto Edge television for some background music. Next I open my big bag of Doritos and the can of coke I bought. Everything is set. I open the white plastic bag and pull my comics out. Which one do I read first? Every comic reader has their own way to decide which to read first. I am pretty basic in how I decide. I simply pick the comic I have been reading longest. Good or bad that ones comes first. Always. I pop a couple Doritos into my mouth, a sip of coke and I lay back. The first page turns and immediately I have left this world. Maybe I am in the desert wondering if The Preacher is going to survive the oncoming sand storm, or maybe I'm wondering if the JLA (Justice League of America) is going to defeat their newest foe. It doesn't matter which, because I am in their world. The comic writers, and artists have created a fictitious world and I am enveloped in it. There are few entertainment medium's which can do this. The biggest being comics bastard cousin, books. Hours will go by while I stand beside Batman as he defeats the Joker eating Doritos and drinking coke. Turning page after page, way more fulfilled than if I was watching some mindless drivel on the TV. And this to me is a great way to enjoy my Saturday. I am utterly and completely happy. Which if you have read any of my past articles you can assume doesn't happen that often. Sure I could be outside living la vida loca but then who would have been there to witness the Saint of Killers killing God? So I urge each of you out there, to not judge someone with a comic book bag. Sure they probably are geeks but they could be a real angry geek like me. Downs Don't like what I have to say? Do you think I really care?
