| The Andy Dick Show -- A TV Review | |||||||
| Is
there a greater genre of TV then the sketch comedy show? For all the memorable
moments, gags, and characters that you will recount with your friends over
and over. And the catch phrases
oh the catch phrases. The sketch comedy
program has long been a fountain for pop culture
when it's good. Like
any great art form, sketch comedy show quality varies. When the right combination
of talent, passion, and creativity is in place the results can be magical.
However, when it doesn't work, it REALLY doesn't work. There is no shade
of gray.
Just ask Saturday Night Live when its creativity falters.
Only a select few groups have gathered the right combustible elements to
produce innovative, memorable sketch comedy, including Monty Python, SCTV,
Kids in the Hall, certain casts of SNL, The Ben Stiller Show, and Mr. Show.
Now finally, there is a new name to add to these ranks
the Andy Dick
Show.
Andy Dick, a longtime bit player in various unmemorable movies and a regular on the television show Newsradio busts out on his own in a self-titled sketch comedy show for MTV. Dick who cut his teeth as a performer on the short lived, but noteworthy Ben Stiller Show, is clearly no stranger to this type of comedy. Delighting in his creative freedom, Dick, who writes and directs each episode, has let loose like never before and seems to be having the time of his life. The creative energy that is present in each episode is undeniable and though not every skit works you can't deny Andy Dick's passion. A passionate comedian is a funny comedian. Intentionally crude and perverse but shackled by MTV to censor any bad language, the show spotlights its stars manic ability for impersonations and creation of bizarre characters. Highlights include the 3000 year old Boogie Man having a mid life crisis, who decides to give up scaring kids and opts to become a house Deejay. Marilyn Manson's goth reinterpretation of the children's classic titled "Marilyn Poppins". Dick endlessly berating Moby over the creation of the shows new theme music. A commercial for Frankenstein Auto Motors- "Remember, fire bad, red hot deals good". And for what likely the show has received the majority of its mainstream attention, Dicks spot on impersonation of Tom Green. Currently in the early stages of its second season, the Andy Dick Show is an innovative sketch program that pushes the limits of comedy and good taste. The show is teeming with guest appearances and uses the star power to great effect. Guests thus far have included Moby, Vitamin C, Outkast, Ben Stiller, Tenacious D and the real Tom Green (in a hilarious segment) just to name a few. The only limitation of the series is the quantity of the seemingly mandatory spoofs of MTV shows. If you aren't familiar with much of the networks other programs, some jokes might be lost on you. The future of the program, which at this point seems to be a one man show, rests heavily on the shoulders of its star, writer and director. As long as Andy Dick stays committed (or for that matter doesn't get committed) the laughs seem likely to continue. But for now, if you want to keep up with what your friends are constantly imitating, watch this show, it is a can't miss! Do you Agree with what he's saying?
