| Strange Brew - A DVD Review | |||||||
|
"This
movie was shot in 3B, three beers and it looks good, eh?"
I can't believe that this movie is twenty years old. It seems like only yesterday I was watching these characters on SCTV. Actually it was yesterday, they still run reruns of this show on my local comedy network. But, it's been forever since I've seen this movie. So when I saw this DVD sitting there all by its lonesome on the shelf I couldn't get to the cashier fast enough. For me personally, this is one movie that brings back fond memories of my youth. I would definitely place this cinematic opus on top of my big pile o' guilty pleasures. So now thanks to the glory of modern cinematic technology I can watch the adventures of the McKenzie brothers over and over again. But before I do that, let's get to some reviewin'! The plot of this film is pretty typical. Two Canadian brothers are unwittingly caught up in the evil plans of an evil brewmeister who intends to take over the world by distributing beer laced with a mind-controlling drug. Geez, how many times has this story been told? But little does this brewmeister know that two Canadian stereotypes were going to unintentionally throw a wrench into his machinations. Psychotic hockey players. Beer vat death trap. Voices from beyond the grave. Electric shock therapy. Perils at every turn, yet somehow the McKenzie brothers are able to rise above them all and save the day. Now I realize that this movie
will not be for everyone. One of the main reasons I'm such a big fan of
this film is that I'm such a big fan of SCTV. If you've never seen Bob
and Doug McKenzie on SCTV and watch this movie I don't think you'll enjoy
it. The movie was essentially capitalizing on the success of "The
Great White North" comedy album way back in 1981. So the movie requires
you to have prior knowledge of the characters before seeing the movie.
I mean you pretty much get the gist of the characters early in the film,
but it still helps to have that background knowledge of the characters
origins to enjoy the film even more. In all honesty, this is not a great
movie. The production values are quite low. The storyline is a bit convoluted.
Some of the dialogue between supporting characters is quite awful. But
for some strange reason I love this film. Maybe it's the performances
by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas that save it? Or maybe it's because there's
a flying dog in it? I don't know. Well if you remember Bob and Doug McKenzie,
thought they were funny and haven't seen the movie. Buy it, it's only
about $20. And if you've never heard of these characters before or hate
SCTV, why don't you rent "Maid In Manhattan" for the eighth
time you bunch of dumbasses.
