| Batman Must Stop The Sniper! | |||||||
| Following
the story of the Washington area sniper is like sitting through the tensest
of movie thrillers, complete with chills and gore. Within the Washington
area, police continue their hunt for an alleged sniper who has gunned down
nine people, seven of which are dead and two badly injured. The predator's
targets are completely random with victims being hit in such pedestrian
locales as parking lots of craft stores, grocery stores, and while pumping
gas. The most ominous of items was when police discovered a tarot death
card near a bullet shell reading, "Dear Policeman, I am God."
Sifting through the details on this case and others like it, one is quickly
reminded of the works of fiction. It seems in recent memory there have been
a string of incidents (September 11th included) that are so disturbingly
creative that it would suggest the work of a near super villain. It is like
we are outside the boundaries of reality how frighteningly fictitious-like
the works of these madmen are. It is scary to think that outside of our
window horrors like this are going on. And one has to wonder
where
are the Batmans of the world?
I half expect that once this sniper is apprehended he will be cloaked in some bizarre costume. This is the only way I can seem to rationalize this in my head. This sniper's acts are so preposterously wicked that it is hard to imagine that this is just another human being. The actions of this individual are so deranged that it puzzles me to think that people like this exist. Their apparent motives seem torn from the pages of a comic book, a crime novel, or screenplay. What drives a person to do something like this? I am sure some will speculate theories of growing up within a broken family or being bullied as a child. To me, any reasoning towards the development of this type of behaviour is moot. Plain and simple, an individual that would commit such terrible acts as this is pure evil. I really don't think an underprivileged childhood justifies or better yet, explains this. This sniper is insane. The "I am God" statement is a bit of a giveaway. It is terrifying to see life imitate art such as this. That is why this story and countless others are so hard to comprehend because situations of this nature are usually saved for movies. It is shocking to see villains practically leap from the big screen into our newspapers or worse yet, into our neighbourhoods. Unfortunately when life does imitate art it always seems to be the dark recesses of art. It would be nice for more people to copy the actions of Batman or Spiderman. I am sure many of us would not complain if a few more individuals imitated heroes. When reading horrible stories like the Washington sniper, despite my confidence in our law enforcement, it would be comforting to know that a copy cat Batman was there to take down this psycho.
