| Getting to the Bank on Time | |||||||
| As
consumers we've become used to a certain level of customer service from
the stores we shop at. In fact customer service can be the difference between
a store we shop at and one that we stop visiting all together. For probably
the last decade stores and the service industry have been trying to increase
this margin of customer satisfaction to keep them on top of their competitors.
There is one industry however that seems to be completely ignorant of these
developments, an industry that has been servicing people for hundreds of
years or should I say screwing people? No, I'm not talking about brothels,
I'm sure they service fine, I'm referring to banks. Those big corporations
that charge you copious amounts of money for giving them money, it doesn't
make sense.
Like all of my long-winded complaints, let me start with a story. Don't worry I'll keep it brief. So I decide that I'm going to need some U.S. dollars for my upcoming trip to the beautiful ATL. *Note: Banks in Canada are not small and privately owned; they are large corporations that have branches all across the country (like bank of America). Anyway, I show up at 4:35 and the stupid thing is closed! It's 4:30 for God's sake and you've shutdown for the day? So I push the bulging veins back into my forehead and notice that they are now open until 8 on Thursdays, so I decide to return the only night they are open that late. So here comes Thursday and me entering the bank. I'm not even going to get into their archaic methods of dealing with customers. I overhear the bank tellers telling everyone that they are now open late on Thursdays and even open for a few hours on Saturday. They are so proud of this fact that they say it to everyone wow, you guys are really pushing the envelope of customer service! It's 2004 don't you think it about time? Why is it that banks have always felt that they are better than everyone else and that we should fit our banking into their schedule? For decades people have had to bank during their lunch hours or leave work early to cash a cheque (check for our American friends) or withdraw some cash. Don't you think it's time you stepped up with the rest of the world? I know there are ATMs now and online banking but don't think I'm going to bend down and thank you for that one, you still charge me insane rates just for letting you hold on to my money. Oh you give interest you say? Yeah, thanks for that .25% on my saving account, I can retire comfortably now. No wonder tellers are being
replaced by machines you guys are never available and when you are you
charge me a fee for using a human
wha-? That's stupid. I think banks
should stop and realize that they are in the customer service business
and start acting like it
oh geez
there goes that vein again.
