| The Death Of Alone Time | |||||||
| Life
provides us with many demands on our time. Our attention is constantly split
towards work, lovers, friends, and family. Each group is comprised of many
individuals, vying for a particular share of our personal schedule. Your
life contains a virtual network of different people that wish to allocate
your time and divide your days. The visits, the calls, the talks, the meetings,
the "pop ins", and so on and so on. Within this hustle and bustle
is there a greater luxury then privacy? The vaunted "alone" time.
Those precious minutes and hours that we get to spend in between our life
priorities. Whether it is the night watching TV alone, spending the entire
afternoon reading, the quick drive over to a friends house, or the brief
walk before meeting someone for coffee. No matter the length, we cherish
these undistracted moments. As much as we appreciate the priorities our
lives have provided, we equally appreciate that short time when we are left
alone.
Technology seeks to destroy "alone" time. Technology prefers "available" time, with its constant innovations in devices and outlets for people to get a hold of us. The worst example of this the new Vbox Rogers AT&T's all in one phone and messaging wireless device. This nifty piece of machinery includes the following features; phone, email, two-way text messaging, chatting ability with up to 5 people at once, and above all you can take it with you anywhere. Before we go kissing the large ass of technology on another breakthrough I ask this simple question WHO NEEDS TO BE THIS CONNECTED? Do we really need to be able to talk, write, read, and chat with pals while we are getting a haircut? Like there aren't enough demands on our time, now we have the ability to be accessed half a dozen ways at every waking moment? You know I love my friends and all but they don't have anything important enough to say that is going to demand me to have a 5 way chatting session while I am taking out the garbage. I think we can wait until we get together on friday night to talk about how bad some movie is. I love email, don't get me wrong, but I think can wait until I am at work or home to see that "dancing baby" forwarded chain mail crap. Can we not get a moments reprieve from being bombarded with communication? Call me crazy, but there are some times that I just don't want to be text messaged. "-LOL The new Austin Powers trailer is hillarious-" Geez, I can see how you just couldn't wait to get that off your chest, but I'm in the middle of getting my wisdom teeth pulled out..so I think we can table that conversation for later! And it was bad enough when people were always talking on their cell phones everywhere, now I may have to wait in a grocery line behind some fruit loop getting his jollies off doing two way text messaging. Put the toy down sir and pay for your food! This is another case of technological innovation for the sake of innovation. Just because you can add more features doesn't necessarily make it better. I want to be available, but not 100% accessible. I desire to be able to not be reached at times even if it is just for 15 minutes on a streetcar. Anyone who feels they need to be this reachable needs to slow down. Wait and talk about it later. Cherish those alone moments you might just get some thinking done. but that's just my opinion. Do you Agree with what he's saying?
