Star-ffirmative Action
As I sit aimlessly flipping through magazines during my weekly tradition of loitering at Indigo books, my eye catches the Entertainment Weekly 2002 film preview. I put my coffee down beside me as I start to thumb through the latest issue. The mag goes into great detail to provide information on the forthcoming big blockbusters that anyone who surfs online already knew about (There are no "firsts" left for magazines anymore…). I turn the pages, taking in pictures and brief synopsizes on the countless films to be released over the year. Pages start to turn faster as I begin to notice a disturbing trend. I pause for a moment, collecting my thoughts, and leaf back a few pages to verify my concerns are warranted. That's when it hits me, as I notice the top billings for many of the films…Mandy Moore, Britney Spears, Eminem, and Beyonce Knowles. Is this is a misprint? Have the editors confused the film section with the music section? No. This is just another case of the abuse of star-ffirmative action…those who get special opportunities in showbiz because they are a visible celebrity minority.

Hey, people like her bubblegum pop music, let's put her in a coming of age romantic comedy!

How many film productions in the last year or so have been built entirely around musical celebrities? For example, members of NSYNC, Mariah Carey, DMX and countless others. How many other films were pushed off the schedule to accommodate these vehicles for unproven actors or box office performers? How many films were not greenlighted in order for Paramount to make the sure to be classic "Crossroads" starring Britney? How many roles were not given to legitimate actors? Think about that…there are so many actors and actresses out there trying to get a break or capitalize on a break to only then be buried by a musician? Must be hard to realize that one of the people standing on the glass ceiling isn't even in the right building. You're a musician. You are supposed to be holding back up and coming singers, not actors!

These special privileges are also reversed. Think about how many celebs are given lucrative record deals? These can't be easy to get…just ask your 42 year old friends in that band still practicing in their garage. But yet Jennifer Love Hewitt, Billy Bob Thorton, and Julio Caesar Chavez all seem to have gotten recording contracts. Once again bands that have been playing for years and have created a buzz are pushed aside so Shaq can make an album. Don't even get me started on Mr. O'Neal and his basketball cohorts with their Kazaams, Space Jams, and all their other media ventures. Hey guys pick an industry and go with it…so the rest of us can choose our own careers accordingly.

Now I am sure some marketing big wig will say the reason behind this sort of action is "crossover appeal" or "recognized brands". And I guess I can stomach that in some cases. There are a few of these crossovers that have worked successfully. J'lo has proven she can get it done in the music industry (did I just type that?) and Wil Smith has erased any memory of his Fresh Prince days. I am not saying that actors can't sing, singers can't act, and athletes can't host Saturday Night Live. But just because they can sing and look pretty in a video doesn't mean we necessarily want to drop money to see them act in a movie. I am all for equal employment opportunities and showbiz should be no exception. Lets get the right person for the right job…before we have another incident like Eddie Murphy singing "My Girl Wants to Party All the Time"

…but that's just my opinion.
