These studio
heads are a bunch of lemmings sometimes, I swear...
They get one unexpected hit and they all have to beat the formula to a
pulp. Scream, anyone? How about Boyz In Da Hood? Okay, those aren't good
examples, but there is always the Farrelly Brothers movie. Dumb and Dumber
and There's Something About Mary have stretched out the boundaries of
the gross-out comedy, and have raked in millions doing it.
This time, I suspect the studio heads wanted to figure out a way to get
more men and women to see this movie. For the ladies, they'll cast Selma
Blair and Christina Applegate as Cameron Diaz's roommates in San Francisco
who share the trials and tribulations of the singles scene (a la Sex And
The City). For the men, we'll take that same cast and have them in bras
and panties for as long as possible throughout the movie. Oh, and don't
skimp on the gross-out humour! Add the requisite sing-along (some Aerosmith
tune from Armageddon) and you have a Farrelly Brothers movie without the
Farrelly Brothers. I think they could sue for royalties here.
I could go into the plot of the movie here, but I'd hate to spoil the
one or two funny gags in the whole film. The movie, in summary: Girl hates
boy, girl likes boy, girl chases boy (road trip), girl loses boy, boy
chases girl, fin. I will give the casting director credit for rescuing
Applegate and Jason Bateman from the depths of television obscurity, since
they are both entertaining in this flick. Selma Blair had the almost thankless
role of Jane Burns, the female equivalent of American Pie's Jim (Jason
Biggs).
I would rate this movie two and a half stars if someone paid for your
ticket to see the movie, but one and a half if you couldn't get Spiderman
tickets and were forced to see this instead. If you are turned on by the
sight of Cameron Diaz in underwear, this movie rates a four since you're
probably sitting in your bedroom alone with the sound muted, pausing at
all the relevant bits you 13 year old pervert...do us all a favour and
wipe the tape off when you're returning it to Blockbuster, okay?
That's my review and I'm sticking to it...
