BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE DVD Review

---------------
Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
-----------------

Bowling for Columbine is an expose view of the firearms legacy in the
United States. Sprung from the tragedy at Columbine High School in
Colorado, Michael Moore travels the country to speak with gun owners,
militia, parents of slain children, law makers, and law enforcement. As an
interviewer and documenter, Michael Moore has no comparison. We think of
documentaries as those old black and white films shown in our classrooms -
much like on The Wonder Years (anybody...anybody...). However, Moore has
taken documentaries to a whole new level. Not only does he interview, he
also challenges the interviewee when he doesn't agree with their position.
Throw in news footage (you'll be suprised what news reporters act like off
camera during a tragedy), statistics, cartoons, and actual security camera
footage from Columbine High School and you have an intense,
thought-provoking look at guns, the culture of weaponry in America, and the
trickle-down effect on American youth.

If you remember, the massacre at Columbine was attributed to the music the
kids listened to right before they entered the school. Moore interviews
Marilyn Manson to get his thoughts on being persecuted for the tragedy.
I'll bet your views of Marilyn Manson will change after listening to his
heartfelt, artuiculate speech. He is definitely more educated than most of
the people persecuting him and gives a fresh view of the tragedy. He also
talks about the students that made it through the horror and how their
counseling has been handled (not at all). It's interesting to hear how
President Clinton handled foreign affairs the day of the shootings. If you
are distrustful of politicians now, you'll start a revolution when you hear
the stats.

The two kids who rampaged through Columbine High School went bowling the
morning of the shootings. Hence, the title. Did bowling cause the kids to
start shooting? Did Marliyn Manson's lyrics? Did Lockheed Martin have
anything to do with it? Moore explores each of these possibilities in
depth. Weaving multiple threads of gun ownership vs. work for welfare vs.
racial inequalities vs. National Rifle Association vs. Klu Klux Klan, Moore
proves to us how so many of these entities are interconnected. Moore also
interviews Chartlon Heston, who proves that being a priveleged celebrity
puts his life at more value than ours. I'd like to get my bare hands on Mr.
Heston...

The movie also explores why Canadians can have 7 million registered
firearms and only 165 shootings per year, whereas America has 11,200
shootings per year! Moore also makes the trip to Toronto and verifies the
"Canadian Open Door" policy to demonstrate the differences in our cultures
when there is almost no border between Canada and the U.S.

If I write any more, I will give the movie away. I am fairly critical of
movies and the entertainment business in general. However, Michael Moore
has went where no other has gone before with this documentary. It is a
riveting, educational, and wholistic view of the 2nd Amendment. I feel
everyone should watch this movie and see how their perception of guns,
politicians, and new footage will change. I can guarantee you will walk out
of this movie a more educated person. I know I did.
