| 8 Mile -- A Movie Review | |||||||
|
Don't
believe the hype. That's all I have to say. Don't believe the hype you
hear about this movie before you go see it. If you read all of the hype
about Eminem and his terrific performance in his debut as an actor, you're
gonna hear how great he is and how wonderful the movie is. If you are
the type of person who likes to read reviews before you shell out the
dough to see a flick, I would suggest forgoing that little ritual and
just going to see it. Not that all the reviewers are wrong, in fact the
film is good. It's just that they're screaming oscar and if you enter
the film waiting to see Tom Hanks you might walk away a little let down.
Well for the first 25 minutes anyway...
A little expectation can go a long way in ruining what can be a great movie going experience. I entered this film with great expectations and for the most part 8 mile delivered. However I get the feeling that if I didn't know anything about this movie before I saw I would have been really impressed. I mean come on another singer trying out his acting legs? Generally this spells stinker. However, much to all the critic's surprise Eminem can actually act, but I didn't get the chance to be surprised. I had read all of the rave reviews telling me that this was a must see film about a white kid who tries to make it in a black dominated industry. I expected it, I wasn't surprised, but I was in agreement. Jimmy Smith Jr. (Eminem) is a white
kid living in Detroit's city limits, 8 mile. Known as Bunny Rabbit, or
B Rabbit to his friends, Jimmy needs a way out, out of 8 mile, out of
poverty. Jimmy's way out is through rap. It's a typical story of overcoming
adversity, with a none too typical ending. Director Curtis Hanson (Wonderboys)
is able to capture Jimmy's struggle wonderfully with great camera work
and subtle lighting. He brings you into Detroit, across the tracks to
8 mile, and into the life of Rabbit. The whole cast delivers strong performances...well
I'm wasn't sold on Kim Bassinger's (Bunny's mom) shitty accent, which
happens to change three times throughout the film. Bunny's crew were enjoyable
to watch and added to every scene they were in. All in all this is a film
worth watching, even for those, no, especially for those who don't like
Eminem. You may find yourself with a little more respect for the potty-mouthed
white boy from Detroit's under belly. If you've read all the hype I would
suggest clearing your head of all expectations and go into 8 mile with
a clear mind and you won't be disappointed. Do you Agree with what he's saying?
